Mt. Guyot – Great Smokey Mountain National Park

February 22

Jill, Amber, Alyssa, Brandi, Mindy and Chivonne

I don’t remember whose idea this was but we are hiking 16 miles uphill in the snow and the ice in the Smokies. We are leaving bright and early. We are all dressed for winter. Everyone even brought their crampons. We hiked nearly 11 hours and about 5000 foot elevation gain and temps in the 20’s!

We start at Snake Den Ridge Trailhead.

Snake Den then intersects with the AT. We followed the AT up to the turn off to Mt. Guyot.

Weird enough we got to a high point on the trail with views and it was sunny and pleasant for about 1/2 mile with views!

Then back into a pine forest. Mt. Guyot has not official trail to it. At the correct place you have to branch off left and Bushwack your way to its peak. Which by the way of course has no views.

It was a pretty steep hard climb to the top of Mt. Guyot. Stomping around in the snow didn’t make it any easier.

Then we turned around and headed back down the trail. We finished this trail at dark. Unfortunately the SB6K has another peak less than a mile ahead called Old Black. We did not make it to this peak. I will have to go back for that! But it will be in the summer with more daylight.
